Total knee replacement is a safe and reliable procedure to help patients with knee pain, stiffness and deformity regain function and quality of life. Dr. Shah performs a specialized type of knee replacement that allows him to make a smaller incision and spare muscle integrity to allow for less pain, faster recovery and better cosmesis.
What is Total Knee Replacement?
Total knee replacement, medically known as total knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to substitute the bone and cartilage of the damaged joint with plastic and metallic components. In this procedure, up to three bone surfaces can be replaced with highly biocompatible components; Tibial Base Plate, Femoral Component, and the Patellar component. Total Knee Replacement is the best treatment to restore your quality of life – helping you relieve your pain and return to an improved functional level.
How is Total Knee Replacement Performed?
The surgery is done under spinal anesthesia. Once consent has been obtained, the affected knee joint is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and covered with sterile drapes. A 4 inch incision is made to expose the knee joint in which the patella bone appears on the top. The bone is moved out of the way to get clear access to the knee joint. The knee joint consists of bones including the lower end of the femur and the upper end of the tibia. In between the two bones is the damaged cartilage that generates the pain in the knee. The damaged tissues in the joint are removed and the underlying bone is reshaped to accept the prosthetic components.
Is A Total Knee Replacement Right For You?
TKR is advised to those patients who suffer from advanced knee arthritis, which cannot be controlled by non-surgical means. The procedure usually incorporates examining patient’s knee pain level and disability, and it is best suited for patients who:
Feel a “grating” sensation in the joint during movement
Don’t get relief from using a cane
Had a previous injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of their knee
Feel a decrease in their knee motion
Feel their knees are stiff or swollen
Benefits of Total Knee Replacement?
Multiple studies show that a majority of patients who are appropriate candidates for the procedure have good results with total knee replacement. There are several possible advantages of this surgery, including:
Freedom from pain
Improved quality of life
Before and After the surgery
Before the surgery, the bones present inside the knee rub against one another causing pain, stiffness, and disability. The cartilage that allows for smooth and painfree motion of the knee softens and wears away. The knee is bent into a position that makes it easy for the surgeon to access the joint.
After the surgery, the damaged cartilage is removed, along with a small amount of bone from the tibia and femur. A piece of smooth, medical-grade plastic is placed in between the metal parts to facilitate ease of movement.
